These were written by some of my students in my English classes when I taught in Beijing, China. Knowing what my learners are interested in is very important, so I asked my students to write me a letter about what they wanted to learn and what parts of the textbook they were most interested in covering. The textbook was too dense to be able to cover in the amount of time we had so I worked with my students to thoroughly go over the parts they were most interested in. I wanted to understand the strengths and needs of my individual learners to be able to plan instruction that met their wants.
I also had my students fill out a “Let’s Get Acquainted” worksheet. I had about seventy students in this class so it was very hard for me to get to know them all individually. I had them fill out this form to get to know more about their cultural heritage, their goals, interests, their English language knowledge, what they wanted to get out of the course and anything else they felt I needed to know. I wanted to choose appropriate strategies and make accommodations based on what they told me. |
